Adam Pettle's 2001 hit, which is being revived at Factory Theatre, is not only a reminder that Pettle, at his best, is one of our most valuable playwrights, but that it's possible to make something fine even finer.
The original production of the show introduced us to a show with a big heart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an even bigger sense of humour and a correspondingly large set of problems.
Most critics and audiences were able to forgive the urban sprawl of the original script, the uneven quality of some performances and the too-naturalistic style of the production because the basic writing was so good.
Surprise! This time around there are no apologies necessary, no excuses to be made,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no slack to be cut.
Pettle has tightened and sharpened and focused his script so it now plays at a sleek two hours. The direction of the Pettle brothers (Adam and Jordan) finds just the right breathless tone for this tale of gamblers, families, and survivors of all types.
And best of all, there's an absolutely ace gallery of performances on display.
The story deals with Ben, a young man deep in debt due to his habit of betting on the horses. He's also got a significant other with cancer and she's carrying around the baggage of two impossibly feuding sisters.
There's also Bear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a friend Ben met at the racetrack. He's a recently recovering addict, who stands up at one 12-step meeting and announces, "I'm Bear and I'm an alcoholic and a drug addict and a gambler and … hey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how many of these am I allowed to have?"
William MacDonald is superb in the part, shaved head shining, goatee bristling and good intentions radiating through his vices. But he's just one of many playing at the top of their form.
Joe Cobden's Ben is the perfect vehicle for this actor's unique brand of quivering intensity. And he's constantly fascinating to watch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the highest compliment I can pay an actor. He makes you empathize with this lovable loser, yet allow us to understand why he can break other people's hearts.
The major heart he breaks is Patricia Fagan's as Ruth, Ben's partner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], suffering both from cancer and the pain of living with a compulsive liar and gambler. Fagan doesn't ask for one single drop of sympathy from us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playing it tough and real all the way. And of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that makes us care for her even more.
It's also a real treat to welcome Lisa Ryder back to the stage as Beth, her tightly wired sister who won't have sex with her partner because she thinks it will ruin her winning streak as a championship curler.
Ryder's beauty, style and wonderful way with a line of dialogue have been sadly missed. I'm happy she's back.
It's also a treat to have Harry Nelken in Toronto. This pillar of the Winnipeg stage has delighted me frequently over the years in other cities, but it's great to have him here as Eli, the "prophet" Ben meets in a synagogue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who dispenses most of the show's anecdotal Jewish wisdom.
As rich as chopped liver, as spicy as a smoked meat sandwich, as heart-warming as a bowl of matzo ball soup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nelken anchors the play with his combination of humour and humanity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the secret to Pettle's writing.
Shannon Perreault does wonders with Lily,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the hippie-dippy sister who promiscuously loves all world religions and Geoffrey Pounsett finds a complete character, tartly touching and gruffly masculine, as the frustrated partner of Beth.
The Pettle brothers keep the dialogue snapping along briskly as if the show were a vintage sitcom and, at the final preview I attended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], laughter rocked the house constantly.
But they also understand how to shift gears with a rapidity that a NASCAR driver would envy and when the show is supposed to hit your heart, it scores a bull's-eye.
When I first heard that Ken Gass was reviving this play only 10 years after its premiere, I wondered why he was doing it so soon. We can all stop wondering. A script this good and a production this good are always welcome.
