Young Carlisle amputee gets chance to sparkle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Olivia was struck down by the potentially fatal bug in 2006 and had little chance of survival,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But she went on to make a miraculous recovery and now amazes everyone as she jumps around on her artificial limbs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Mum Kim Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of London Road,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Carlisle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said she is lucky to have such a dedicated team of staff looking after her at the Cumberland Infirmary limb centre in Carlisle.
She said Olivia has always loved dressing up in girly clothes and every time they went into their local Brantano shoe shop she would make a beeline for the pink children heels. But, because her false limbs were only designed for flat shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was no way she could wear them.
kept saying to her one day but didn really see how,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then I mentioned it at the hospital and they went out of the way to help. They said it would be difficult,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if there was a particular pair of shoes she wanted to wear there may be something they could do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she explained.
The only elevated prosthetic feet they could find were in adult sizes so Kim thought Olivia would have to wait until she was older.
But to her amazement the team decided to see if they could adapt them to fit a child something they had never done before,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
They spent many hours intricately carving down a pair of adult feet so they would fit Olivia, constantly adapting them until they were perfect.
the day they were ready to collect she was delighted and couldn wait to wear them. I never seen her expression like that before. She wanted to wear them straight away and had them on all day, said Kim.
Olivia now wears her special limbs when she dressing up with her friends at parties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and no longer has to feel different.
Kim said they can express how grateful they are to the limb centre staff for going beyond the call of duty to help.

never tell Olivia she can do something, we want her to think that anything is possible, and people like that help her to believe it. time Olivia limbs have been adapted by the NHS but as she gets older her parents know that they will have to pay a small fortune to get her the most realistic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], top of the range prosthetics. That is why they are constantly raising money to go into a trust fund for that purpose.
