Sr.'s life of hard work started when he was a young child, shining shoes in downtown Corpus Christi and picking cotton in the fields surrounding the city.
His earnings went to his mother to help sustain him and his nine siblings. Later he was recruited to sell life insurance for , a career that allowed him to climb the ladder to prosperity.
"My dad was a very hard-working, competitive man," son David Moreno Jr. said. "He was gone before I woke up and came home after I was asleep."

After five years in El Paso, Moreno was promoted to San Antonio division director and vice president, the first Hispanic to hold an executive position in the company. When he retired in 2004 he was on the board of directors, another first for a Hispanic.
"He was very,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], very proud of being Mexican American," David Moreno Jr. said. "It really influenced his life."
He used his position in the company to help promote other minorities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wife said.
When debating whether he should move his family to El Paso,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she remembers a determining factor in his acceptance was that as a manager he could extend the opportunities he had gotten. "He always wanted everyone to succeed, to give everyone of color a chance," she said.
As busy as he was with his career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was always available for his family.
"As a dad, he was very loving," David Moreno Jr. said. "He always told us he loved us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coached my team from the time I was 7 to 15 years old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made it to recitals and games."
Daughter remembers her father's positive attitude. "He would say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'there are two ways to live your life: You can choose to be happy or unhappy. I chose to be happy,'" she said. "He was such a strong believer in 'what your mind can see, you can achieve.'"
When it came time for Moreno to retire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], David Moreno Jr. said the family had reservations. "We were very, very scared he wouldn't survive retirement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Their fears proved groundless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He put the same energy into retirement that he had into his work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
And even though the family had gone on vacation every few years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], David Moreno Jr. said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his parents started traveling more, taking trips including an Alaskan cruise.
