Which type of shoe is healthier
But research led by an American doctor shows running shoes many of them designed and marketed as able to absorb pressure on the joints when running stress and strain your knees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ankles and hips more than running barefoot.
Dr. Casey Kerrigan and her team measured the strain placed on the joints in 68 participants while they were running on a treadmill both barefoot and in a simple runner, the Brooks Adrenaline.
She compared the findings to an earlier study of walking barefoot and in high heels and found that running in running shoes may actually be harder on your body than walking in twoinch heels.
In both cases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the shoes increase stress known as "torque," a twisting force on the joints that is believed to contribute to osteoarthritis.
The new study found that running in running shoes causes a 38 per cent increase in torque at the knee, and similar increases at the hip and ankle, compared to running barefoot.
Walking in high heels, by comparison, increases torque on the knee about 23 per cent, compared to walking in bare feet.
In the new study, subjects wore markers on their joints that were photographed as they ran, with a "force plate" (like a glorified scale) embedded in the treadmill to measure the pressure they exerted. The results were published in the December 2009 issue of PM The journal of injury, function and rehabilitation.
But the findings don't necessarily mean you should fling off your shoes before you run. Kerrigan says running barefoot on the beach is fine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but running barefoot on asphalt and concrete is known to increase injuries.
There are shoes on the market meant to mimic being barefoot, such as the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Kerrigan says none of them succeeds in completely eliminating the stresses of running in shoes.
That's why she is developing her own shoe, which she calls Oesh (yes, that's all the letters of the word "shoe").
Most modernday running shoes are full of "foams and gels and posts," Kerrigan says. In the Oesh, a cantilever design allows for a more natural step and spring.
Kerrigan, a 48yearold with experience in mechanical engineering, has been running in her prototype shoes for five years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and believes they may have helped her fend off the common joint problems that can come with age.
In July, she left the University of Virginia to start her own company, JKM Technologies LLC, which will focus on developing her shoe in coming years.
Her most recent study was funded by Brooks Sports,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Kerrigan is planning a limited release of women's walking shoes in late 2010 that she hopes will help finance the rest of her venture.
Tom Jenkyn, an associate professor of human biomechanics and biomechanical engineering at the University of Western Ontario, says it is common for researchers in the field to work directly on product development.
"Otherwise, what are we doing this for?" he asks.
Kerrigan and her team are not alone in the search for perfect footwear. For example, Jenkyn has worked with Stanford University's Tom Andriacchi on developing a shoe in that is "squishier" on the inside, he says.
But, looking at Kerrigan's research, he does not think all increased torque is bad for example, it can mean a postsurgery patient is getting better and starting to walk more aggressively.
Monica Maly, an assistant professor in rehabilitation science at McMaster University who applauded the study, says that finding the perfect shoe is key to fending off osteoarthritis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that maintaining muscle strength and watching your weight are also crucial.
