Speaking for the first time since their high-profile split in August, Ms Kemp said she was devastated her 22-month-old son Preston was drawn into a public break-up battle after he was photographed last week with a forlorn-looking Lee.
This was despite the couple's agreement they would not drag their son into the situation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Appearing relaxed and cheery as she played with little Preston at a Sydney park on Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ms Kemp said she did not want to be portrayed as a victim.
"The whole thing with Preston has been heartbreaking, I'm a very private person and it's been a difficult time," she said when approached by the Sunday Mail.
"I don't want it to turn into a mud-slinging match. All the deals involve time in India to satisfy big-spending clients.
A friend said Lee spent only "four to five months" of the couple's two-year marriage at home. The close friend said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite the loneliness, Ms Kemp was determined to save her marriage and had been forced to leave the family home by Lee. "She worked hard to make the marriage work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," her friend said.
"Despite reports,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she wasn't the one that walked away from the marriage. It's been reported the reason for the break-up was cricket and the (overseas travel) timetable.
"That's not true. There was a lot of extra sponsorship that Brett took on that kept him away longer than the cricket season.
"She always knew he was going to be away, (but) the extra time he was away was hard. Anybody would be lonely when their partner is away for a long time."
The friend said Liz had not had an affair with a Brisbane rugby player. Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her trips to Queensland, where she grew up, were to see her two Brisbane-based bridesmaids and friends from high-school as her marriage deteriorated.
"There is no third party involved with the break-up. I've been speaking with Liz closely over the last few weeks and I know full well that there is nobody involved. I think it would be hurtful (for her) to read about that," her friend said.
Ms Kemp, who has primary custody of Preston, has been living with her parents since she was forced to leave the two-storey home she shared with Lee on Sydney's northern beaches. Close friends have attempted to console and cheer up the young mum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has kept busy taking Preston to activities and working out at the gym.
"It's a very upsetting and difficult time for her. Her main concern is she wants to protect her family and her privacy. She is battling through this and remaining strong," Ms Kemp's friend said.
"I don't want it to come across that she is the victim. It's definitely been testing but she's coming out stronger for all of it."
Unlike other WAGs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ms Kemp has not courted the spotlight during her relationship with Lee, refusing to sell photographs of her wedding or baby to magazines and keeping her personal life out of the spotlight.
Ms Kemp and Lee had an agreement Preston would not be exploited by being brought into the media during their break-up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
But last Friday week, Lee had custody of Preston and a photographer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was not a member of the paparazzi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], took a picture of a forlorn Lee and his son in perfect time for a sympathetic and sad Father's Day story in a Sunday newspaper.
A source said Ms Kemp was furious when their pledge about Preston was broken,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The couple's relationship is now acrimonious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Caught in a PR war she was not prepared for, Ms Kemp hired media and government relations consultant Michael Salmon to field dozens of inquiries.
Mr Salmon was a spin doctor for former NSW Premier Bob Carr and worked on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's campaign.
He is up against Lee's long-time manager Maxwell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has minimised damage to Lee's image.
As soon as the split was announced, rumours emerged that Lee suspected his wife of having an affair with a rugby player whom she knew previously in Brisbane.
