Three local designers are catering to a male clientele who wants fashionable swimwear
"It didn't even cross our minds that we're not near a beach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Mark Barrera, 34,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Vil Sihamanotham, 33, the design duo behind the men's swimsuit label Skmpeez.
As the name suggests, Skimpeez is sexy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fun and colourful - bathing suits you can imagine being conceived of in a tropical paradise like Ipanema. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're designed in the duo's downtown Toronto condo and manufactured in Hamilton.
That said, their business was hatched over drinks while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago. They had shopped in Toronto for swimsuits to take to Mexico but there wasn't anything to their liking - meaning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there wasn't anything that wasn't a baggy knee-length skateboarder short or tight novelty style with a salacious word printed across the bum. This got them to thinking their might be an opportunity for them.
And on that holiday, they encountered a local man selling custommade swimsuits on the beach. It involved a short visit to his studio to select the fabric,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereupon he took just a few minutes to sew a suit on the spot.
"We thought,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would be cool to make our own suits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Sihamanotham.
Back in Toronto, they set about designing a brand of men's swimsuits based on the simple belief that there must be other men out there who would like something fashionable.
The two continue to hold down their day jobs - Barrera is a project manager at a bank,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sihamanotham is a graphic designer (who,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course, designs all the graphic prints on their suits).
Their company is now four years old, they have about 40 accounts, including the American department store, Macy's. For the past two years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she has been designing glamorous bathing suits for women. On a recent photo shoot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she had a few male models pose as props. She wanted to put them in the style of trunks worn by Daniel Craig in the famous James Bond scene where he emerged from the sea.
But her hunt turned up nothing.
"Here in Toronto, all I could find was skater trunks or board shorts. And they all looked the same."
So she decided to do something about it. This summer, she will host a party at Maison nightclub,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where male and female models in swimsuits saunter among the guests.
The idea of men in sexy swimsuits dancing at a club in Toronto isn't so far fetched, after all. This Saturday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Toronto gears up for Pride Day, hundreds of buffed and tanned men in sexy swimsuits and armed with water pistols will descend on Sugar Beach for the annual Pride Aqua party.
In the end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it doesn't matter that Toronto isn't an obvious location to launch a men's swimsuit empire. But in the world of ecommerce it just doesn't matter. Fact is, you could probably sell swimsuits based in the Arctic.
