School revolution with classes of 200,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The radical reforms have been introduced by Catholic Education in the Parramatta Diocese,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where 78 schools are trialling an open-plan learning program in large rooms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many built with the Federal Government's Building the Education Revolution funds.
Catholic Education executive director Greg Whitby said the program was designed to improve teacher quality and student engagement and allowed children to engage with new technologies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Teacher quality is the most important aspect of student learning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we wanted to stop teachers working in isolation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mr Whitby said."This way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], teachers can work together and learn from one another. It also mixes it up for students,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who move around the room to different stations with different teachers."
David Popischil,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], assistant principal of St Finbar's primary school at Glenbrook,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said that instead of separating the classes up to Year 6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the new model had three stages.
"We teach the curriculum over two-year cycles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which we call stages. Instead of having Year 3 and Year 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have the two groups combined in stage two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mr Popischil said.
"We have 58 children and four teachers in the room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we separate the children according to ability or interest."
Mr Pospischil said the school had begun using the system this year and had already seen improvements in students."We're working to make learning fun again. If the kids enjoy coming to school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and want to learn because it isn't boring or too hard and they don't understand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then they won't get distracted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
The most revolutionary school in the diocese is St Monica's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at North Parramatta,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where all 198 students are taught in one big classroom."It's a dynamic teaching space because,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as teachers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we work together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Kerry Power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a teacher at St Monica's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said.
