returns to Final Four

The Butler Bulldogs entered their field of competition Saturday afternoon wearing nothing more than shorts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tanks, sneakers-and an attitude. Call it will, toughness, whatever. And they left it adorned in the t-shirts and caps that said "Final Four" across the front. Again.
For the second consecutive season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Butler is headed to the Final Four. No mid-major program in the NCAA Tournament's expanded bracket era ever has made back-to-back trips to college basketball's promised land.
They earned this trip with a couple of furious comebacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the first from the edge of oblivion in the first half and the second from 11 points down to force overtime,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they controlled the action and escaped with a 74-71 victory over the Florida Gators.
There were about 15 seconds on the OT clock when Kenny Boynton's 3-pointer flew long, and the rebound was simply a contest of will. It was no surprise to see BU forward Matt Howard grab it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even if he only got half of it.
The possession arrow favored the Bulldogs. Florida had one last chance to tie after a couple of BU free throws,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but guard Erving Walker's 3-pointer was shot from too far and landed too short.
Butler got another brilliant performance from guard Shelvin Mack,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who scored 27 points. Forward Matt Howard contributed 14 points and five rebounds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the game's biggest.
Florida center Vernon Macklin scored 25 points and dominated the early action, but as the action shifted to the backcourt late in the game his influence diminished.
Butler surged from a 51-40 deficit to trail just 55-52 after a 3-pointer by wing Shawn Vanzant, and a brilliant rebound and coast-to-coast drive by Mack cut the BU deficit to 57-55. When guard Erving Walker missed a layup for Florida, the Bulldogs had the chance to tie-and did when Mack drove for a layup around most of the Florida D.
Macklin made one free throw to put Florida ahead, and then guard Ronald Nored dribbled into traffic and turned over the ball. Macklin made good use of that possession by dribbling into a lefthanded move against center Andrew Smith, with BU's help never arriving and Macklin dropping it in the goal for a 60-57 edge.
Mack was fouled on a drive and made both throws to cut that to a single point, and then the Butler defense stiffened and forced a hopeful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], missed floater from Walker. The Bulldogs meandered through all but the final nine seconds of their allotted 35, leading coach Brad Stevens to call time with 33.7 left in the game.
It took a second timeout for BU to enter the ball properly, but Mack got it to Howard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who drove with his left hand and drew a foul from freshman power forward Patric Young with 30.7 on the clock. Howard made the first but left the second on the front rim, and the Gators chose to attempt the final shot. Walker's 28-footer missed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and overtime beckoned.
The Bulldogs had to play most of the extra period without center Andrew Smith, who fouled out on the first possession.
At 3:33 remaining in OT,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rugged freshman Khyle Marshall rebounded a miss by Mack and converted a 3-point play inside for Butler's most "comfortable" lead since the early stages.
With that lead advantage still in place a minute later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, Butler tried to double Walker in the backcourt, and he escaped and found partner Kenny Boynton for a 3-pointer that tied it at 67-all.
Two Nored free throws put the Bulldogs back in front, but Walker sneaked behind a screen and nailed a 3-pointer to put Florida back in front-which Mack answered seconds later with one of his own and BU was ahead 72-70.
Butler had a chance to turn a one-point advantage into something more substantial inside the final minute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it wasted too much time on the trip and wound up with Mack forcing a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock that didn't even catch the rim.
