Putting excellence in perspective
SCOTSBURN - This is the time of year when Pictou?County sports fans and running enthusiasts get used to hearing Dave MacLennan's name again.
After all, he's usually good for at least one major marathon win each spring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be it the Blue Nose International Marathon in Halifax over Victoria Day weekend, or the upcoming Johnny Miles Running Event here in New Glasgow.
MacLennan has entered 40 marathons. That's 1,040 miles over just 40 competitive trips. He's won 23 of those races - a winning percentage of nearly 58 percent. To give you an idea of this dominance, Tiger Woods has won 38 per cent of his career golf tournaments.
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's clear that MacLennan is top dog when it comes to the marathon in Nova Scotia. His best time is around two hours, 33 minutes. How fast is that? Go to the gym and set the treadmill to a six-minute mile, somewhere around level 10. Then, run for 21 hours - the concept is almost too ridiculous to try.
He's won the Johnny Miles six times - all in a row,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dating back two years ago. Last year's, however, was one of his favourites - a loss by just 10 seconds to Dartmouth's Ray?Moorhead.
"That was a really fun race," MacLennan said. "It was so close down the final miles - that's the fun part. It doesn't matter much whether you win or lose - most runners are just focused on their own time."
MacLennan's own time is so often good enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that the narrow finish was a bit of a surprise to some. What wasn't a surprise was his victory at the Bluenose in May,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], followed by an appearance in the 10-kilometre event at the Joe Earle Victoria Day Road Races in?Trenton the next day. That appearance says a lot about the Scotsburn native's loyalty to the local running scene,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but isn't the sole reason the Johnny Miles is always circled on his calendar.
"First of all, it's just a really well run, well organized event," he said. "You get meals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], T-shirts here - there's good bang for your buck. And after all that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's named after Johnny Miles, and every marathon runner in Atlantic Canada knows about Johnny Miles and wants to be a part of the event that has his name in the title."
MacLennan started running when he was 15, and got into competitive races around 20. His first marathon came right here at the Johnny Miles in 1987 - on that day, he didn't come away the winner.
"I missed the Boston Marathon qualifying time by one minute," he said. "But once you do it the first time, you know you can finish the thing and then you can work on improving your time.
"I made it to Boston a few times, anyways."
So, how does this course compare to others that the 45-year-old has run?
"It's got a little more of an uphill grade than you might think," he said. "Uphill running isn't my strength - I much prefer going downhill. But overall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a really nice course for runners and for spectators - because it's a loop, you'll pass by the finish line four times."
MacLennan packs on miles of training all summer, and does speed training at the Pictou?YMCA in the winter. Most of his runs take place in the hilly areas and mountain bike trails of Scotsburn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], generally five to 10 miles per day, along with a 20-mile long run (no kidding) on?Sundays.
Training aside,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he doesn't really have a secret to success.
"My parents were always fast moving people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I guess I was just blessed with some running ability."
MacLennan's become an inspiration to a lot of young runners in?Pictou?County,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but believe it or not, MacLennan has people he admires.
Kenyan world record holder Haile Gebrselassie ran the marathon in about a half-hour faster than even MacLennan can. Now that's fast.
"To put that in perspective, put the treadmill up as high as it can go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you still wouln't be going fast enough to finish it in the amount of time it took him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he exclaimed.
