NSW police bust counterfeit goods ring
At around 10.45am (AEDT) on Tuesday, police raided the premises on Punchbowl Road,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Belfield, as part of a joint investigation with the NSW Department of Fair Trading.
"We have seized what only can be described as a huge amount of counterfeit goods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Inspector Paul Warden from the Campsie Local Area Command told reporters.
"It's a huge amount of counterfeit goods and it is very difficult to put a figure on it but if these goods were genuine they would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars," Insp Warden told reporters on Tuesday.
"With this operation hopefully we have put a big dent in the supply chain of counterfeit goods in Sydney and in other places such as EBay."
The operation has been planned for several months after concerns were raised about the standard of some goods surfacing in Sydney.
Nike security and protection manager Matthew Layton told reporters it was concerning Australian consumers were being misled, but the fake products could also cause injury.
"There was a very high chance someone could do an injury with these products one of the items found were actually children's shoes," he said.
It's believed the counterfeit goods were imported from Asia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
NSW fair trading minster Anthony Roberts told reporters the seizure would protect consumers from buying inferior products and small businesses from competing with cheaper goods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"These counterfeit goods do nothing but harm small business owners who try to do the right thing," he said.
"When you are purchasing goods, you can be safe in the knowledge that the NSW police force together with fair trading are working together to ensure you're protected."
The importers of the fake products,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], believed to be hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Nike trainers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], handbags and perfumes, are "ripping off hard working Australians trying to get a job in a particular industry", police minister Mike Gallacher said.
