In 1990,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most people would have thought that recycling old sneakers was a little out there, but not Nike employee Steve Potter who envisioned shedding old Nike shoes into a reusable material. Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman threw his support behind the concept, and the rest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as they say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is history. Since 1990,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nike has recycled a whopping 23,175,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],241 pairs of old athletic shoes.
Today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nike goal of recycling athletic shoes has become second nature. With Reuse-a-Shoe bins available at 300 locations in the US alone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it becoming easier to find a shoe recycling facility near you. Once the shoes are collected, they sent to a recycling plant in Wilsonville,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Oregon. Each shoe is cut into three slices, and then fed through grinders and purified. Once purified these substances become three unique types of Nike Grind:
Nike Grind Rubber is used for track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles, playground surfaces and consumer products.
Nike Grind Foam is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Nike Grind Upper is used for cushioning pads for indoor basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], volleyball courts and equestrian surfacing products.
The Reuse-a-Shoe program has provided Nike Grind recycled material to nearly 300 sport and playground surfacing projects around the world.
