Michael O One dad day gift stands out
Don't get me wrong, I have loved every coffee mug, tie, hug coupon, shaving kit, watch, bracelet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hand-drawn picture,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beer mug, shot glass,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stuffed animal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bathrobe, slipper set,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tie caddy, Nerf football, autographed baseball, dress shirt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], classic DVD,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], barbecue set, pocket fisherman, wallet, key chain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Missions tickets, popcorn tin and new pair of sneakers I have ever received in my 20 years of daddydom. However, if I am being totally honest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they all tie for second place behind my favorite, No. 1 Father's Day gift.
I remember getting it as if it were yesterday. It was unique, beautiful and genteel. I couldn't wait to hold it. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was the first person to get to hold it fresh out of the wrapper. Weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces and could fit easily in my two hands. It was a gift I would cherish and enjoy every day for the rest of my life. Eighteen Father's Days ago, my daughter Sarah was born.
It is almost hard to believe that the young woman who stands beside me today once fit into my two hands. She is 6 feet tall, blond,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blue-eyed and drop-dead gorgeous.
It is the lucky man who gets a baby on Father's Day. Seriously,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what better gift is there than to become somebody's daddy on the very holiday that celebrates being a daddy? I had only been a dad for 14 months when I was gifted with Sarah (we're Irish-Catholic) so I was still pretty new at it. I did know one thing about fatherhood: I loved it.
I took Sarah and her older sister, Katherine, with me everywhere. My wife and I were a diaper-changing, blanket-swaddling, car seat-using pit crew. Our diaper bag overflowed with supplies: bottles, blankies and Cheerios. We felt we were so good at the whole parenthood thing that we added a third child, Emily, in 2000.
We are a mighty family of five. It is the perfect number for us. This Father's Day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like every other day of the year, I want nothing more than to be surrounded by my girls: the one I married and the three we made together.
That is all any father really wants. We love opening stuff but not nearly as much as we love just hanging out with the people that are the reason we are dads in the first place.
Being a dad is the most important job there is (OK, so it is tied with being a mom), and I feel damn lucky to have it. Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars for the great journey I have been on. Watching tiny babies grow into confident,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beautiful young women is a joy. I am sure dads feel the same way about their sons growing into young men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I can only write from my experience. Let me just say, being the father of daughters is awesome. It is, without a doubt, my greatest accomplishment.
