Local master artist Robert Vickrey dies Naples Daily News,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Vickrey, 84, was recovering until recently at The Chateau,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the community's nursing facility,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from a recent heart attack. He was stricken fatally retiring after watching a late-night movie.
Known internationally for his style of lyrical realism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vickrey painted carefully with a mixture made daily of fresh egg yolks and powdered watercolor called tempera. He worked almost every day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said J. William Meek, Harmon-Meek Gallery owner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in his Naples Park studio until his first heart attack.
When Vickrey was graduating from Yale University in 1947, German abstract painter Joseph Albers, department head,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told him he might as well shoot himself as do egg tempera.
"The art world is going abstract," Albers said. "You better, too!" Refusing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vickrey knew artistic prejudice but often had the last word.
"He believed in what he was doing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Meek said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "and was extremely successful. He had galleries for 50 years and only gave up his New York dealer in 2001. If Bob chose to leave a gallery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he had a new one in weeks."
Meek estimates Vickrey leaves 70 unsold paintings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most unfinished. His last show was in February. He had annual Harmon-Meek exhibitions for 31 years and is represented in 65 museums,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art.
He often painted his four children in his works. He was also well known for his paintings of the winged white cornette head-coverings worn until 1964 by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Catholic order founded in Paris in 1633.
Vickrey was known to the public for having illustrated nearly 80 Time magazines covers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which have been since donated to the National Portrait Gallery. He wrote four books and was the subject of two monographs.
Meek said, "I had to pinch myself because I was so close to greatness. And he persevered during hard times for realists."
