Jungle survival
About 73 pressmen were given a rare insight into how soldiers live in the jungle and perform their missions during the '2749 Minutes with the Royal Malaysian Army' camping programme held deep inside the Royal Belum rainforest in Perak recently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

"What we are showing you is just a small fraction of what soldiers on real missions will be experiencing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Lt Muhammad Firdaus Zainodin, the army officer in charge of overseeing one of the three platoons made up of pressmen.

During the camp, all the pressmen were brought to a 'survival village' where a crash course on surviving in the jungle was given by the army.
On the offensive: The Royal Malaysian Army's commando unit in action to 'save hostages' in a demonstration on army operations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
They were told that the first rule of survival should one ever get lost in a rainforest is to find a suitable spot near a water source to set up shelter and build a fire.
They were also introduced to a variety of edible plants that could be found in the jungle like bamboo shoots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kacip fatimah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tongkat ali and pokok lemba leaves and fruits.
"Other than plants, traps could also be built to catch small animals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Lt Muhammad Firdaus.
The platoons were later brought to a site,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about six kilometres away from the Malaysia-Thailand border,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to set up camp for the night.
Lt Muhammad Firdaus said a simple tent would be enough to shelter two soldiers for a short period of time.
He also said soldiers would usually be paired with another under a "buddy system" to look out for each other during operations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The hammock should be tied carefully so that the whole structure will not collapse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Lt Muhammad Firdaus.
Pressmen were also given a bag filled with blanket, hammock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], poncho,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], water canteen, fire starter kit and rations enough to last for two weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], complete with a set of army uniform and boots.
Other sessions conducted by the army during the camp were a demonstration by the commando unit on a hostage situation and the War Dog Wing canine unit.
