Honorary degree 'bizarre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
George Stroumboulopoulos polished his trademark black sneakers for the occasion and tried not to swear in front of the academics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He was, after all, about to receive the University of Calgary's honorary degree -- the highest accolade the institution can bestow upon an individual.
But while his shoes stayed clean, his mouth did not during the late-night talk-show host's four-minute convocation address to more than 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],300 students graduating Tuesday.
In an unprepared speech that included a nod to his mother and punk rockers The Clash,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the host of CBC TV's The Hour entertained and offered advice to the fall graduating class and their families.
"If you took this program because your parents told you to, go back to school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "Your whole life sucks if you don't do what you love. And if you love what you do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will never feel like a job."
Stroumboulopoulos and energy leader Gwyn Morgan were presented with an honorary degree Tuesday in two different ceremonies.
Morgan, an oil and gas producer, created EnCana Corp. in 2002, serving as president and CEO until 2005. He was voted Canada's most respected CEO the same year.
Stroumboulopoulos, meanwhile, is a two-time Gemini Award winner for best host or interviewer for his work on The Hour.
The edgy show combines news,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talk and celebrity, and has also won two Gemini Awards.
Stroumboulopoulos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who earned a radio broadcasting diploma from Toronto's Humber College in 1993, called the U of C accolade "bizarre."
"I think it's nice and cool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but let's be honest, it's bizarre, too, when a guy like me gets something like this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the 35-year-old said before the event. "This speaks to students."
A pop culture expert, meanwhile, said universities are increasingly trying to balance the pomp and circumstance of convocation with students' non-academic interests.
"Someone like George shows that passions can be pursued and a person can still remain cool," said Gisele Baxter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a lecturer at the University of British Columbia.
U of C officials say that while awarding the hipster may be interpreted as a sign the university is trying to be "cool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," it also speaks to his impact on young Calgarians.
"He is a great role model for our students," said Allison Mackenzie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director of community relations.
"This award is for rising stars of lifetime contributors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people from all walks of life who've made a difference to society. And I do think it's cool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she added.
