Family poems
Like Parth showed in his comments on In the Well by Andrew Hudgins, I initially was confused about the poem and what the speaker was saying. But, I disagree with the point of the story. By the end, I saw a darker theme of fright and vivid betrayal by the father, just to find a missing dog. The son goes through a very frightening experience and appears to be dying while his father mercilessly lowers him down this deadly well. The description of his travel and the resulting re-birth somewhat assuaged my concerns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I thought that the father almost forced him to go down the well after a presumably dead dog, and am not sure if the climatic retrieval represented kindness or cruelty on the father behalf.
Comment on Other Sister, for Ellen by Jeffrey Harrison: This poem seems to show a typical relationship between and older and younger sibling. Older siblings tend to take advantage of their younger brother or sister naivety,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially when they are not on good terms (which is usually quite often). I can remember my older sister doing things like that to me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I would always believe her because I, like other younger siblings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would seek her approval. On the other side, older siblings like to see what power and influence they can have over someone else. The poem states can still remember / how thrilled and horrified I was / that something I just made up / had that kind of power, showing how the older sibling was excited by the control he had over his sister. Such relationships seem to be present more or less with all siblings. I was however a bit confused by the ending of the poem. I suppose the ending implies that the story stuck with the younger sister and continued to upset her, but I also feel that the sister mentioned in the last lines might actually refer to the younger one. Perhaps this recollection of the story is being told years later, when the younger sibling actually did lose contact with her family as had been described with the imaginary sister.
Response to Daughter Leaving Home by Linda Pastan: Like Nicole, I also was attracted to this poem above the others because it seems relevant for my life and my upcoming move away from home. I really liked how the bicycle trip was a metaphor for the daughter life progressing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as seen through her mother eyes. The short lines seem to reflect the progression and speed at which her daughter grew up, because each line so quickly shifts to the next with little punctuation. The last line about the daughter goodbye tied the bicycle story into the title,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], showing how the daughter no longer needed her mother help to ride the bike and could do so on her own, just as she became more independent in life.
