Family Finances
We are moving to a uniform policy next year and I need to figure out what to do. how many uniforms do you buy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? My ds is hot all the time so I just ordered short sleeved polo style shirts and then I thought I would get sweaters or sweatshirts for him in the fall when it starts to get cooler. I ordered 4 polos and a sweatshirt jacket with the school logo on them. I am thinking about ordering more of the pants that convert to shorts so that when it gets cooler he can wear those. He received one pair as a gift and they are great. he goes to school dressed warmly enough and then take the bottoms off when he gets hot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Anyway, just wondering how many uniforms you buy. Or if you have any strategies you could share. I would like to think that some of these shirts will last to hand down to yds but that may be unlikely.
This is our second year with uniforms for our daughter. She attends a public school with "uniform dress." This year we bought 8 short sleeve polos and when it got cold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we had her wear long sleeve shirts under the polos. The LS shirts weren't in the school colors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but no one ever said anything, it was kind of a workaround the system. We found Liz Claiborne uniform pants at BJs before school started for $10 each, Target's uniform stuff goes on sale about a month into the school year, JCP has great sales, Old Navy always has uniform stuff in the beginning of the year and Land's End has great, great sales on uniform pieces. Check out their uniform page online.
Are you a public school because its easier to buy uniforms for public schools than private. Public, unless the dress code expressly forbids it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd buy a whole bunch of khaki cargo shorts right now while they are on sale, TCP usually has good deals. You'll be able to start the school year. I'd say 6 pairs of shorts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 6 pairs of pants and you are good to go. Pants, wait until the uniform stuff goes on sale.
Our daughter will be able to wear her skirts and shorts for the third year in a row since she's growing up, not out. I bought them big to begin with and they all have the inner elastic waist. Her pants will be too short next school year unfortunately. Shirts didn't really last from year to year. She isn't the neatest child and even buying white ones and soaking them in oxiclean didn't get out some of the mystery stains.
Make sure you read the uniform policy backwards and forwards so you don't buy anything that is forbidden. Technically our system doesn't let kids wear multicolored sneakers, the middle schools really enforce it. But it is usually looked over at the elementary and high schools.
***Totally love Firefly BTW,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], discovered it over Christmas/maternity leave and DVR'd every episode for a marathon on my terms.
I went to HS in Puerto Rico. Public Schools there require uniforms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I had 5 short sleeved polo shirts (its hot there so that's all I needed) and 3 skirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We weren't allowed to wear pants.
So I would suggest enough clothes to get by until the next load of laundry.
We replaced shirts as needed during the semester. The polyester skirts seemed to last forevere and were handed down to a cousin of mine for her start in our school.
That's the great thing about uniforms - no one knows how many times you've worn something in the same week!
My boys wear uniforms (Catholic school) - Old Navy puts all their uniform stuff on sale for $5 a piece in August, so I stock up then. In 1st and 2nd grade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they only wear their school uniform 3 days a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so 5 short sleeved shirts and 3 long sleeved got ds1 through the year (they wear their gym uniform on gym days) - and he has 5 pairs of pants, but truly only wore 3. DS2 won't have gym in kindy, so I went ahead and bought him 5 short sleeved shirts. They have school sweatshirts they can wear when it's cold as well.
Basically enough that I don't *have* to get the laundry done mid-week, kwim?
Our uniform policy says black dress shoes for boys, but ds1 wore black sneakers without a problem. The hard thing was finding black socks for him.
I have to lol about how many clothes my kids seem to have, even with uniforms. I'm pretty sure I wore two skirts my entire 4 years in high school, and basically just one most of the time because the other was "too long" . . .
WalMart online has great deals on polo shirts. 4 packs for $12 or $15 I wanna say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
My dd had 5 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of shorts, a few jumpers and 6 or 7 of each short sleeved and long sleeved shirts. Partially because we suck at doing laundry sometimes.
I bought boys shirts for my dd - because in a few years hopefully her brother can use them.
Children's p[lace also has uniforms, but their pants wear out.
Also Goodwill and other thrift shops are also some good places to look (of course it sounds like you have to have the school logo on your shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so maybe not)
DD#1 has been in uniform since prek. I always buy 5 short sleeve ppolos, a couple long sleeve oxfords, a couple cardigans, and camisoles (so white tees for you) for cooler days. Old Navy has great sales during the summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the quality of their uniforms have gone down. I prefer TCP or Gymboree, with Gymbo definitely being my favorite for quality. It's easier for girls since skirts/jumpers can always be paired with knit tights during cooler weather. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional.
