Familiarity makes him good fit as manager
Give credit to Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington for meeting one objective. He said he didn't want to take long to find a new manager,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he didn't.
John Farrell was the club's first choice and he will be in place by the start of the World Series. The Red Sox didn't name Bobby Valentine manager until almost December last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. That leaves six extra weeks for Cherington to focus on the real work at hand-improving the roster-without being saddled by searching for a skipper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Cherington even has worked out the compensation arrangements for hiring Farrell from the Toronto Blue Jays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Red Sox will send shortstop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays and will receive righthander David Carpenter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The deal was officially announced by the clubs Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Whether Farrell is worth a starting shortstop is another question because a quick hire doesn't guarantee the right hire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course.
Farrell has managed for only two seasons, and his 154-170 record isn't exactly dazzling. He was criticized by one of his well-respected veterans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Omar Vizquel, for not being able to properly prepare his young players. Farrell and the Blue Jays front office weren't on the best of terms, either,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to reports. And the 50-year-old Northeasterner certainly isn't a media darling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nor does he try to be.
But Farrell brings to Boston one important ingredient that Valentine lacked: support from the entire Red Sox brain trust,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They know him from his four seasons as the team's pitching coach. They know how he works and they like how he works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
They also believe he will do what is wanted.
With the last guy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they never were quite sure. The perception that Cherington didn't choose Valentine created an obstacle in their relationship that they never overcame. That won't be the case this time.
In Farrell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cherington has hired a guy who already is on his side.
A strong working relationship between front office and dugout appears more important than ever in today's game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Certainly more important than managerial experience. Mike Matheny and Robin Ventura both enjoyed successful seasons in their first seasons of managing in part because of their ability to get along with their general managers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Farrell also has a history with many of the Red Sox's players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they will take comfort in knowing he will do things the way they are used to things being done in Boston. Farrell has experienced the challenges of working in a place where every breath by everyone in the organization is scrutinized.
He succeeded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too. Under Farrell's supervision from 2007-2010, the Red Sox's pitching staff ranked third in the AL with a 4.11 ERA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], quite an achievement when your home is hitter-friendly Fenway Park.
Farrell's history with the Red Sox would seem to make him a good hire. His time in Toronto makes you wonder why the Red Sox didn't join the trend of overlooking experience and pick Brad Ausmus. In short,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no one knows now if the Red Sox have made the right choice.
