Endorsement Deals Gone Sour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Just weeks after the Games ended, Barilla announced it would not extend its three-year contract with Bode Miller. A company spokesperson said three-year deals were standard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pointing to a similar contract with Olympic champion skier Alberto Tomba. "The program with Bode was done. We wrote to Bode agent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lowell Taub,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and said we would not pick up the option,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Barilla rep Fabio Fortina in a published report.
That report suggested there was more to the story, citing that Miller was not a match for the family-oriented Barilla.
As a member of the Oakland Athletics, Giambi developed a reputation as one of baseball most feared power hitters. His offensive prowess enabled him to win the American League MVP award in 2000.
Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], things went south for Giambi after he headed east to join the New York Yankees. In December 2004, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Giambi admitted to a federal grand jury that he intentionally used steroids.
Giambi ended up paying for that: He was making about $3 million per year from endorsements before the Pepsi and Arm Hammer deals lapsed. In June of 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nike announced it was ending its relationship with him. He tried to play it cool by telling the media it was "no big deal;" however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sports marketing experts had a far different take.
"Jason went from one of the most marketable players in baseball to one of the least marketable in about six months," Jonathan Wexler of Playing Field Promotions told The New York Times.
Giambi turned things around in 2005, winning the league Comeback Player of the Year award and scoring a deal with Reebok that included shoes and batting gloves; terms were not disclosed.
Dennis RodmanSponsor: Converse
Value: $15 million
Why the deal went sour: Outlandish behavior
It may be hard to imagine a time when Dennis Rodman was only known for his prowess in grabbing rebounds. Over the course of his career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he devolved from one of the game great defenders to a complete freak show -- on and off the court.
While some fans found Rodman entertaining, Converse wasn very amused. In March of 1999, the sneaker company exercised an out clause to end its deal with Rodman a year early. At the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the tattooed hoopster claimed Converse owed him $3 million.
In the years that followed, Rodman remained a notorious figure; however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that didn mean he was marketable. Companies weren exactly lining up to hitch their brand names to a man who,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], among other things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had been arrested and charged with drunken boating.
He apparently didn learn his lesson. In October 2003,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an intoxicated Rodman crashed a motorcycle, hurting a leg and his chances of returning to the NBA, when the Denver Nuggets were said to have offered him $10,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 a game.
