Although the 1998 romantic comedy You've Got Mail explored the issue of the threat to independent bookstores from giant retail chains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in reality it has been the move to online sales and digital readers that poses the biggest threat.
Now even big chain stores are struggling to remain profitable in the face of internet behemoth Amazon and other online stores.
Zabriskie Booksellers, at Bondi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has become a casualty and echoes complaints by big department stores about shoppers who browse in stores, then buy from overseas retailers online.
Niki Zubrzycki,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who opened the store three years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told The Sunday Telegraph many people simply would not spend money at a small store.
"People are really tight at the moment, and if they can get a book cheaper, you can't blame them," Ms Zubrzycki said.
"And in the leadup to Christmas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all that talk about online trading and cheap overseas deals really drew attention to it."
Ms Zubrzycki said that instead of coming in to spend money, a lot of people used the store as a way to find the name of a book they were looking for so they could order it online.
