Durant joins elite company with signature shoe
So why shouldn't his sneakers show it?
Durant's first Nike signature shoes are like storybooks for the reigning Rookie of the Year. On the sole of each left-footed shoe is a list of the workout regimen -- from duck walks and crab walks to getting to practice 40 minutes early -- that helped the Oklahoma City Thunder guard become one of the NBA's rising stars.
The right shoe has the street address of the gyms and recreation centers where he developed his game as a kid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Every place I worked out or played somehow is in the shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Durant said Saturday after showing off the new high-tops at a clinic for about 80 children at the Salvation Army Boys Girls Club in southeastern Oklahoma City. "Paying homage."
Durant debuted the sneakers in a Dec. 27 game at Washington,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], near his home in Suitland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Md.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they didn't hit the store shelves until this week. There's a black shoe that has an orange Nike swoosh on one side and a blue swoosh on the opposite side, featuring the Thunder's color scheme.
The white version takes it a step farther,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with one whole side of the shoe colored with the Thunder's reddish-orange.
"I told them when I got there that I wanted mine to stand out. They did a great job of making it look like no other shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Durant said, wearing a pair of the black sneakers. "Our colors obviously has a big part in that. Just making it with one whole side dedicated to our colors.
"Once you see me on the floor, or when you see a tape on TV, you should know. That's the kind of effect I wanted."
The shoes also have a glossy finish on one side and a flat leather look on the opposite side -- an ode to Durant's different personalities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Off the court, I'm kind of a laid-back guy. But once I step on, you see that fire. I'm always yelling and screaming," he said.
Beyond the two main versions of the shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are also alternative color schemes of Durant's KD1. There's a green-and-gold shoe hearkening back to Durant's rookie season before the Seattle SuperSonics relocated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a burnt orange version representing his year of college at Texas and a black-and-white version.
He said the final versions were delayed slightly while Nike was waiting for the NBA franchise to unveil its new name and color scheme over the summer.
Nike set the retail price of the sneakers at $88 because Durant said he and his brothers found it "tough to pay for shoes that were $130 or $140" when they were kids.
And work has already begun on a KD2. Durant's main request: a strap.
Durant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who ranks sixth in the league in scoring at 25.3 points per game, joins an elite group of players -- such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James -- to have signature shoes with Nike. But he's not letting that go to his head.
"If anything, I'm in the company with a lot of great players if you have your own shoe," Durant said. "Hopefully,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can follow in their footsteps and become one of the best players ever to play. This shoe kind of reminds me that I've always got to continue to work hard.
"I'm just glad they did me some justice in giving me my own shoe. It feels good."
The hard work couldn't be more evident than in the shoe's design. Hunt's Hill is etched into the mid-sole on the side of the shoe in addition to the bottom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where 18 aspects of his workout regimen are listed.
The tongue of the left shoe features a postage stamp -- with the denomination 35, his jersey number -- as a tribute to his mother's job with the postal service. The right shoe has an emblem for the Library of Congress, where his father worked. There are also stars on the back of the shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a subtle reference to the flag of the nation's capital.
Durant hoped to inspire some of the kids, speaking to them about motivation after the clinic. He said he would have went "crazy" if an NBA player ever showed up at his old recreation center,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although at age 20 he doesn't see himself as all that far removed from the children he was working with.
"I'm still growing up myself. I think kids have a more productive day than I do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Durant said. "I sit at home all day and play video games and eat candy. I think I'm still a kid, too."
But there was a time when Durant was back home in Maryland wearing his Air Jordans on Hunt's Hill and only dreaming of playing in the NBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I wasn't a big shoe guy, but every time a new shoe came out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I made sure I'd see what it was. I wasn't a guy that collects a lot of shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I was a fan of them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Durant said.
