Do as you're bid
Excitement is in the air at Auctioning4u's office in Olympia, west London, as my friend Frances Boyd and I empty our bags. Christian Braun and his colleague, Jessie Harcourt-Cooze, have agreed to examine our unwanted goods and tell us what they can sell on eBay.
"Your Armani jacket should do well and you'll probably get some bids for the electric razor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Jessie. She taps away at her computer and, moments later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reveals that there is indeed a demand for Philishave razors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], judging by the prices they are attracting on eBay.
Last month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], three people were convicted of stealing from eBayers and there are regular scares about security, but, in Britain alone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 10 million people use the site and the worldwide annual turnover is more than million.
Although only a tiny fraction of eBay trades go wrong, having someone to hold your hand if you are new to the online marketplace is worth the extra expense. Auctioning4u charges a third of the sale price, with a minimum fee of
"It's simpler because you don't have to go through the business of registering yourself and finding the right category for the piece you're selling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Christian Braun, the company's founder and a former venture capitalist. "It's a one-stop shop. We know what will help something sell and we photograph all the clothes on proper mannequins. Our fashion expert knows exactly how to describe the piece that you're selling and what clothes buyers are looking for."
There are experts in every area,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from toys and sports memorabilia to cars and technology. The company employs 45 staff and has four outlets, with plans for more. Having listed your goods, it stores them and then, the sale made, dispatches them to the buyer and sends the seller a cheque.
Frances has never used eBay before. "I'm sure I've got lots to sell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I just wouldn't know where to start valuing and listing my things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she says. "I would feel nervous about dealing with strangers."
Braun and his team will accept almost anything within the eBay regulations (no firearms or human body parts) and boast a 90 per cent success rate. Recently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they sold the recording device that Audrey Hepburn spoke into in the film My Fair Lady for and a seven-and-a-half-ton Mongolian tent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which fetched
Christian advises people to list their goods for 10 days to get the best deal, but Frances and I decide on three. We are both pleased with the results. My shaver is snapped up for my Armani jacket sells for and Frances's nets "Well worth it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she decides.
A growing number of companies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as Auctioning4u,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], act as eBay drop-off shops. eBay is keen to stress that it is not officially linked to these sites and, as always,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is an element of "buyer beware". Check the commission charged and how long it takes to pay you.
