Comic Elvira Kurt performs better in good shoes
Comic Elvira Kurt and Store Gazing meet ostensibly to interview a pair ofShabbies Amsterdam boots which reference Blundstones meet Fryes, but we are soon fondling Converse sneakers in more colours than Para paint samples.
Kurt is host of the 8th Annual Funny Girls and Dynamic Divas funder held May 26 at Jane Mallet Theatre in support of Sistering, which aids homeless, underhoused and low-income women. Performers include fellow comedians Carla Collins and Nikki Payne.
Kurt, a Second City alum who has appeared on Leno, is heard bantering with Jian Ghomeshi Fridays on CBC Radio's Q about her candidates for that week's "Cultural Hall of Shame."
A frequent guest on CBC Radio's The Debaters, Kurt was voted Funniest Female Comic at the Canadian Comedy Awards; was a Gemini nominee for her comedy special Elvira Kurt: I'm a Big Girl Now; just taped the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, set to in the fall; and does 300 stand-up gigs a year around North America.
She is a native Torontonian of Jewish-Hungarian heritage and recalls shoe shopping with her mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

"I hope my kids have more self-esteem than following in my footsteps. Self-esteem, intimacy, my mother - I have a wide range of issues. Why else would I risk censure from complete strangers? It is a tough business to be sensitive in - you get constantly battered by rejection."
Kurt arrived wearing classic penny loafers to facilitate trying on shoes. She laces up a pair of basic white Converses. She is diminutive, with corresponding tiny feet.
"It starts at the feet," she explains. "I perform better in good shoes; if I don't feel comfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not going to be funny."
She has to limit the number of shoes she buys these days.
"Now that I have kids it's not like the carefree, lesbo days of 'me, me, me.'
"Madeline is a fashion plate, the girliest of girls," she says ironically. "It's as if the Disney Princess hooked up to my 4-year-old. There go all my hopes and dreams of matching tees and sweater sets.

"My parents have a dark sense of humour," she says. "My mom was so embarrassed about being a hairdresser; she told people she was a massage therapist. Hairdressing wasn't an honourable profession. My dad was a welder."
Kurt had gone to U of T and enrolled in the science program with the intention of becoming a doctor to please her parents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I was overwhelmed," she recalls. "I was starting to sleep with women and it was starting to freak me out hormonally. I came out.
"Before graduation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I went to Yuk Yuks at the old location on amateur night. I thought, 'I could do this. I have the nerve.' I wrote out a set but was so unnerved about the sexist derogatory intro - 'sluts, whore' - it threw me. So I just came out and told one or two stories about my mother, who is very negative. She takes her pleasures sadly.
"My mother says, 'I'm not like that.' When I got a special on Comedy Central, my mother said, 'Don't be happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tomorrow they will take it away.' It's like Snoopy doing the happy dance in front of Lucy to drive her crazy. My mother is so highly critical,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I am only comfortable with people who think I am the problem."
For her clothing needs, Kurt patronizes thrift shops.
"I scour them for clothes from small,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dead men," she explains. "I shop at H boy's department; I can't shop for women's clothes. My ideal store has men's shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], boy's clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], high-end bras,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], comic books, sex toys and shoes.
