Bud Adams moving on from Peyton Manning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Peyton Manning is headed to the Denver Broncos barring an unexpected snag in contract talks. Manning called Adams this morning to inform him of the decision.
"I was hoping we would win out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Adams told The Tennessean this morning. "I thought we'd be ahead of Denver. I thought he'd want to stay in Tennessee. … I thought we could outdo them. But I guess we didn't do it. He called me himself and told me he wasn't coming, that he made his mind up to go with Denver.

Manning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the most celebrated free agent in NFL history, has instructed his agent to "complete negotiations" with the Broncos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to ESPN.
The Titans began pursuit of the former University of Tennessee quarterback after Adams made it clear to his front office that he wanted to sign the four-time NFL MVP,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Adams even said he was willing to offer a deal that would keep Manning with the Titans in an executive role after his playing career ended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I absolutely was going to pay him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Adams said. "And I was going to pay him to be with us until he was ready to be buried. And I was going to take care of him. I was going to spend a lot of money on him. But he didn't want that. He wanted to be somewhere else and I can't do anything about that.
"He knew about what we were going to pay him, and it was going to be a sizeable deal."
Manning visited the Titans in Nashville last Wednesday then worked out for team officials and coaches on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. He also worked out for the San Francisco 49ers and Broncos, and all three teams indicated they liked what they saw. Manning did not play last season because of neck problems that have required multiple procedures.
The 89-year-old Adams, who founded the franchise in 1959 as the Houston Oilers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was hoping Manning would be the player to take the Titans back to the Super Bowl. The franchise's one and only trip to the big game, Super Bowl XXXIV at the end of the 1999 season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], came up just short in a 23-16 loss to the St. Louis Rams.
"I was hoping we could get him," Adams said. "On my next birthday I will be 90 years old. So I felt he could get us in the championship game quickly. These things happen. You sometimes don't know why they happen, but that's the way the business goes. He was nice enough to call me and tell me he wasn't going to be our man.
"He played football in Tennessee and I think we were close to getting him. But he said it was just his preference to be in Denver,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I think he liked John Elway and was impressed with him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Although they missed out on a probable future Hall of Famer, the Titans remain in good shape at quarterback with veteran Matt Hasselbeck and second-year pro Jake Locker expected to battle for the starting job during the offseason.
"It's not that I don't like the quarterbacks we have," Adams said. "I think Hasselbeck is a fine player,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the young one there (Locker), every time he comes in he scored touchdowns for us. I am going to leave it up to the coaches to make the decision on who plays. When September rolls around we'll still have two good ones."
Adams also said he had no complaints about the front office's efforts to land Manning. Before Adams made his feelings public in an interview with The Tennessean on March 11, the team's free agency strategy was focused on improving the defense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not plunging into the Manning sweepstakes.
"They worked real hard on it and they thought he could get the job done for us," Adams said of Chief Operating Officer Mike Reinfeldt and General Manager Ruston Webster. "We are going to miss getting him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but we didn't get him. I told him I hope we are not playing him. That would make me miserable."
