Bowling leagues in vogue
Whether it's the "stylish" shirts and shoes or the stress relief of hurling a heavy ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bowling is back in style. And folks aren't just heading out for an occasional Saturday night at the lanes-bowling leagues are slowly but surely growing in popularity.
"Leagues have evolved to something different than what they were 20 years ago," said ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], manager of at 12332 W. Interstate 10 near DeZavala Road.
"Twenty years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bowling leagues were fairly competitive, much more so than now. Now, the more popular leagues are for fun. It's more of an event where people are able to get together and enjoy each other's company and have a cold beer and pizza."
For many,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bowling is a way of practicing a sport without having to be an athlete or in a certain physical condition.
"It's something for everyone," said ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], owner of Bandera Super Bowl, 6700 Huebner, and ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 3203 . "You can start as young as 3 years old and keep going until your 80s. You make a lot of new friends. It's a great way to go out and meet people and make relationships."
Pat Fanchez,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has been bowling for 43 years and belongs to two leagues at University Bowl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says that bowling is both social and therapeutic for her. After recovering from a knee procedure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fanchez struggled to find a way to be physically active.
"Bowling is good exercise and it gets me out of the house," Fanchez said. "It lets me be around people the same age as me and who have the same likes and dislikes. When I'm at the bowling ally, I feel no pain. When I'm home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my knee is stiff and everything hurts."
But longtime players and league players admit that until recently, the future of bowling was troubled. As league players grew older and quit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], younger players were dismissive of the sport.
Buenrostro, a former professional and lifetime bowler, purchased Bandera Superbowl and made several changes to attract younger bowlers, including hiring live music, karoke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], offering 24 hour bowling all days of the week and various events and specials all week.
He's currently in the process of revitalizing Astro Bowl, with hopes that younger people will form more leagues.
"In this business, leagues are your bread and butter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Buenrostro said. "We try to target everyone as a league bowler. (Since the changes,) younger bowlers said we're a bowling alley on steroids. We rock. "
In addition, many younger bowling league members are attracted by the cheap prices and affordability of the sport. Leagues offer house balls and shoes for no additional cost, as well as varied playing seasons for beginning bowlers shy of making a long-term commitment.
"With the economy the way it is today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's harder and harder for people to have fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," San Martin said. "There's so much stress, bowling is an affordable way to socialize and forget about their troubles."
