Arts Across Minnesota Brings India to Crookston,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
A program designed to make the arts more accessible to rural Minnesotans is getting rave reviews from one small town. Last year the legislature earmarked $500,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 for The Arts Across Minnesota program to bring the state's top performing arts organizations to small communities. The first city to benefit from the new program is the northwestern Minnesota community of Crookston,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which got a taste of the Indian subcontinent.
STUDENTS IN A CROOKSTON SENIOR HIGH physical education class watch intently as members of the Twin Cities-based Ragamala Dance Company demonstrate traditional dance of India. Then the students mimic the movements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at first tentatively, then enthusiastically.
As she demonstrates the graceful movements, Ranni Ramaswami explains their religious and cultural significance. For students like junior Merideth Reynolds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a mind-broadening experience.
Reynolds: I had always assumed all types of dance were like ballet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like what I do. This is a lot different - and there's a lot of different ways to go about dancing and showing art.
That's exactly the response Ragamala artistic director and choreographer Ranni Ramaswami is hoping for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She says she's been amazed and energized by the Crookston students' interest in Indian dance and culture,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ramaswami: It's just been great, from the day we walked in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were like three-year-olds in their little ballet shoes and ballet outfits ready to learn dance from us, and the kids are so well prepared here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so receptive. We've had a fabulous time.
Ragamala's week-long residence in Crookston schools will culminate with a public performance Saturday night.
Local arts activist Karen Bang helped lobby lawmakers to fund the Arts Across Minnesota program. She says for Crookston residents, it's a chance to see top quality performances at a price they can afford.
Bang: They'll be able to go to this program for only five dollars for adults and three for children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If they were going to it in the Cities it would be much more - plus the accessibility. Most would never get down that far to see this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Kent: I watched them in a third- and fourth-grade class of about 220 kids who sat motionless for 45 minutes. Anyone who knows anything about eight- and nine-year-old kids knows that's quite a feat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Crookston elementary music teacher Jim Kent says what makes this program so unique is the personal contact students have with the performers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He says a different culture becomes real to kids when they can learn in a relaxed interactive setting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ragamala is also working to expand the understanding of those Crookstonites who already know about dance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Mary Noel teaches tap jazz and ballet to about 150 students in her downtown dance studio,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Ragamala dancers worked with her classes earlier this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Noel: I went to the back of the class cause I made such a fool of myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Mary Noel says it's an experience many of her students could never have without a state-funded program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Noel: Many of the girls can't afford to travel to workshops - they may get to one. We went to Chicago and we hope to go to New York sometime. But many of them can't afford it, so this is a wonderful experience for them.
Arts Across Minnesota officials say other states are watching with interest because Minnesota is expanding arts funding at a time when federal funding is being cut. Arts Across Minnesota will fund programs in 12 communities this year.
