and back to blogging
Wow. that happened quickly. Seems like no time since the hardback. This looks like an opportunity for reflection.
Picture me sitting down in comfortable armchair with a smoking jacket and a glass of fine brandy. And of course, it is, in a way. But at the same time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are so many other parts to my job editing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], proofing, admiring fabulous new covers like the one above.
And of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as I wrote in my last blog here, back in June publicity.
Remember,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], back then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was all fired up about setting off on the UK tour for my sequel The Children of the Lost? (Out in the USA this January - available in all good bookshops. And a few evil ones as well.)
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I happy to report that I just come back from that tour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it was just as much fun as I thought it would be. Hundreds of terrifyingly clever, articulate children listening to me talk about my books and enthuse about everything from the history of fantasy to surrealist paintings definitely my idea of fun!
But even so, there were a few surprises. When doing a signing, always ask how to spell their name. Always. It doesn matter if it sounds obvious, you will find that someone in your line who spells Alice as Jake as or Romana as If,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], during the Q you claim that you enjoy singing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], always be prepared to prove it. Bring an accompanying music track if necessary.
3. When creating a fantasy world with suggestions from a group of nine-year-olds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never delve into the question of the justice system unless you want to see the Mountains of Joy fall under the sway of a brutal totalitarian dictatorship. I have had bright young faces describe methods of torture so elaborate they would make an inquisitor back away.
4. Always be prepared for a laugh where you don expect one. For some reason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eight out of ten British schoolchildren are reduced to helpless laughter by a picture of King James I:
I can see it myself. I suppose it his shifty eyes.
5. Answer any question,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. No matter how bizarre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If someone asks you you fly? reply with utter seriousness. That teach them.
And of course, the most important point of all.
6. Librarians, booksellers, publishers and teachers are wonderful people. Treat them with appropriate reverence they will be meeting a lot more children than you ever could. And they might even invite you back.
So all in all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it been a pretty good year. But, you see, it a book with my name on the cover! For a lifelong book-lover like me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that really never stops being a thrill.
