Sheila E was coming to Minnesota for a wedding this weekend so she decided to bring her family band along -- to not play at her godson's reception but to complete an uncommon club engagement.
"We are gigging a lot lately," she said from the E Family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which features her father, Latin jazz legend Pete Escovedo, 72, and her two brothers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Juan and Peter Michael.
"It's similar to coming into our family room," Sheila, 49, said recently from her Los Angeles office. "We don't rehearse because we just abide by ear. That's what's so cool, since it is very spontaneous."
Saturday or sunday in the Dakota Jazz Club, the E Family will play tunes from its forthcoming debut album,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Love's Throughout,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," which features such special guests as Joss Stone, Gloria Estefan, Earth, Wind Fire, Alejandro Escovedo (Sheila's uncle) and Prince, of course.
Will people hear Sheila sing "Glamorous Life" and also the other hits Prince produced for her?
"They might," she said, "if they yell and scream it loud enough."
Sheila established fact to Prince fans. She met him in 1978 when he was recording his debut album in Sausalito, Calif. In 1984,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she recorded the first of her three albums he produced, after which she drummed in his band from 1987 to 1989 for that "Sign o' the Times" and "Lovesexy" albums and tours.
Unlike most of Prince's other former bandmates, he still turns to her every once in awhile. She joined him onstage last year in Minneapolis for those three from the shows in the 7/7/07 celebration and again this April in the Coachella Festival.
"Musically, there exists a bond; we understand each other," she said. "There's times we get out of the way and often we get in each other's way. However i think the respect that people have for every other works."
Olympic dreams
Sheila Escovedo grew up with musical instruments all over the house. Latin percussion giant Tito Puente was her godfather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and her dad was a big-time percussionist who played with Santana, Puente, Cal Tjader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Woody Herman and his own band,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Azteca.
Three of his four children became percussionists.
"That's Pop's fault," said Sheila with a laugh. She took violin lessons for five years as a child in Bay area. "We was raised hearing him experiment the home. He practiced to records constantly. And if his band wasn't rehearsing, they'd have jam sessions in our family room constantly. So pretty much the percussion instruments -- timbales, congas, bongos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hand toys -- were put down in the house included in the furniture more often than not."
Sheila, however, dreamed of being an Olympic sprinter. But one night when she was 15, among the percussionists in Azteca was sick. She asked her father if she could sit in. At some point during the set, he turned to her to consider a solo. She couldn't know what to do, but she closed her eyes and played.
"It was an overwhelming experience because I'd never been able to state myself by doing so," she recalled. "To be onstage with 16 musicians inside a band signed to CBS before 3,000 people -- for me personally, it was as if there is an out-of-body experience. If this is what heaven was designed to feel like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i quickly wanted to feel like this every day. After i ended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I opened my eyes and also the people were roaring and giving a standing ovation. I do not remember the solo. I looked at Pops and he checked out me, and his mouth had just dropped open.
"When we've got offstage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said, 'I can't deny you what you know. I don't even know the way you know all the things you just did tonight.' I said, 'I didn't know either. What went down?'"
Then there, Sheila knew that they needed to accept percussion as her calling.
From Celine to Ringo
Through the years, she's compiled an astounding r having been an employee with Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Herbie Hancock, Celine Dion, Poison, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, LeAnn Rimes, Gloria Estefan and Ringo Starr (she is the only artist to become invited on three of his All-Starr tours). And she or he is active in a number of charities, especially her Elevate Hope Foundation to help abused kids with therapy through music and the arts. There is a gallery of some favorite high-heels. Just how can she play drums with those 5-inch heels?
"When my back went out in 1990 -- in Minneapolis, It was -- that was it; I had to stop playing in heels as far as the drum kit," she said. "Playing timbales in heels, it doesn't bother me. I like to stand tall and play standing up like this."
Tonight, she'll be wearing some fabulous shoes for that wedding of her first godson, Mychael Davison,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], son of Prince's former manager Gilbert Davison, who owned the Glam Slam (later Quest) nightclub in Minneapolis. Through the years, she's spent time and effort in Minnesota.
