4 rings in 6 years makes Boston the real Titletown
In Vancouver on Wednesday night, the Curse of the Bambino officially yielded, completely and abjectly, to the bounty of the tuck rule. New England owns the sports world in a way that no other region ever has.
All four of the major trophies have landed there in the past decade. The Bruins' Game 7 win gave New England three championships in the Super Bowl, two in the World Series, one in the and one for the Stanley Cup. The great saga of the thwarted Boston fan didn't simply end. It detonated repeatedly, like the closing act at Fourth of July fireworks.
The Curse expired in 2004 with the first World Series win in 88 years. But the gravediggers had already started working in January 2002,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when instant replay and an obscure rule converted a fumble into an incompletion, turning a certain playoff win for the Raiders into the start of the Era.
In that snowbound moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the spoiling of New England commenced. Teenagers there equate victory parades with the launch of an
Certainly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bruins' first title in 39 years set off a special euphoria. Outside of Minnesota, no part of this country understands and devours hockey like the new home of the Stanley Cup. But the elation may not have exceeded the thrill the poor folks of Cleveland took from watching the Mavericks defeat its former favorite son, , and the Heat to win the NBA Finals.
Those people know what pathetic feels like. In theory, we feel their pain just as we supported the Boston pity party all those years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fretting over the many octogenarians laid to rest under Red Sox blankets, never to know the joy of seeing their team win it all. But we really don't. For one thing, Cleveland doesn't have the Yankees as a foil. For another, Boston's sudden dominance kind of drained the sports compassion tank.
Since the Super Bowl began in 1967, only Philadelphia has come close to the short span of the New England quadruple play. The 1974 and '75 Flyers won, followed by the 1980 Phillies and the 76ers of 1983. The 1980 Eagles went to the Super Bowl but lost to the Raiders.
Other areas pulled off the trifecta as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with asterisks. New York had multiple franchises in each sport, so the Jets, Mets, Yankees and Knicks winning six championships from 1969 to 1978 isn't quite the same accomplishment. The NHL didn't get into the act until 1980, when the Islanders won the first of four straight Stanley Cups.
Baltimore got titles out of the Colts and Orioles in the '70s, and the Bullets won the NBA title in 1978, but in Washington. The Warriors, A's and Raiders all reigned in the early and mid-'70s, but the Bay Area, as it is today, was still looking for its first Stanley Cup. (If Olympic figure skating had compensated, the South Bay's and her 1968 gold medal would have been our Bruins.)
At the moment, only 14 regions have a shot at all four titles. Minneapolis and Detroit qualify, while Los Angeles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without an NFL team, does not.
Does that make New England's feat more impressive or less? In an era of huge athlete salaries, playing in a big market certainly helps some of its teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially the Red Sox in baseball's uncapped pay structure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in the quirkily capped NBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which fiscally accommodated the
The Celtics' success has always mocked the misery of Red Sox fans and the mediocre tradition of the pre-Brady Patriots. In most parts of this country, New England's 1986 would have been a year to savor. The Celtics won their third and final title of the era. The Patriots went to their first Super Bowl. The Bears destroyed them 46-10 but they made it.
In Boston, the ball that went under 's glove obscured everything else. The message on the Shea Stadium scoreboard, prematurely congratulating the Sox as world champs, remained a haunting memory for 18 years.
Now, Boston does the haunting. Cleveland burns LeBron James jerseys in part to get past the pain of blowing a 3-1 lead over the Red Sox in the 2007 ALCS. Vancouver rioted after the Bruins swiped Stanley from the favored Canucks. The Raiders still can't believe what happened in Foxboro 9 1/2 years ago. They think they saw one of the most absurd calls in sports history. From another angle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, it looks like an exorcism.
Fast four Few metro areas have won the NBA title, Stanley Cup, . And none has won all four in as short a time as Boston's teams. Here are the shortest spans of four champions in cities that have won all four. Years listed are the years of the championship game(s).
