2m salary cap increase in new collective bargaining agreement
Ahead of next week's opening round of negotiations with ALRC officials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) has finalised an ambitious wishlist that was yesterday obtained by The Daily Telegraph.
As revealed in April,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the RLPA will push for the salary cap to represent 25 per cent of "Total Game Revenue" rather than a fixed amount.
With the ALRC firming to secure a $1.15 billion broadcast deal, the salary cap would grow from $4.2 million to $6.2 million under a percentage revenue formula and deliver $1 million salaries to the game's elite.
Other significant demands outlined in the document, which was circulated to leading players this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], include:
MINIMUM wage to rise from $60,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 to $80,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000;
ORIGIN match payments to double from $20,000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Test payments would nearly triple from $9000 to $25,000;
PLAYERS to receive a fixed share of finals prizemoney,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], starting at $200,000 per team for first round elimination and rising $100,000 for each week thereafter;
FINANCIAL bonuses for players who reach 200, 250 and 300 games; and
LIMITS on the number of jerseys players must sign for their clubs and improved returns on the share of memorabilia profits.
With the assistance of player agents Wayne Beavis and Mike Newton, RLPA boss David Garnsey has been fine-tuning the list of demands for the past three months.
Unlike previous negotiations that have delivered underwhelming results for players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], RLPA officials will have some high-profile support in their negotiations.
A captains club of leading players such as Robbie Farah, Paul Gallen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cameron Smith, Michael Ennis, Ben Hannant and Petero Civoniceva has been formed and will also attend the negotiations.
Farah described the five-year CBA as the most important of his career and urged his peers to be counted.
"Dave (Garnsey) has been working really hard along with a few of us players that will go in and negotiate with him," Farah said.
"We need to take ownership as a playing group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"In the past we've had the RLPA go one-out and been fed to the wolves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"As players in the past we've expected the world and not been willing to do anything for it."
The most novel demand is for clubs to schedule a fixed free day once a week for players to pursue education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], work or family interests.
"Each NRL club will designate one day per week (for example Wednesday) for the season as the day on which no club activities will be scheduled and when the club's players will be free to pursue their professional development, family or educational activities," the proposal reads.
The players also want to encourage more third party sponsorships by being permitted to wear club apparel in advertisements for their personal backers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Their demands also include fine details such as tickets for family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and cars.
At present,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clubs can issue five players with vehicles that are exempt from cap calculations. Under the new plan, 13 players will be entitled to the privilege.
